Digest: Leading jockey Vargas rides three straight winners at Laurel Park

Jorge Vargas Jr. rode three straight winners late in Monday's card to punctuate a four-win afternoon at Laurel Park for the current winter-spring meet's leading jockey. Vargas picked up his first winner with Belfour ($3.20) in the second race and Mila Jane ($10.80) in the sixth, first-time starter Three Hawk ($7) in the seventh and Kaitain ($4.40) in the eighth. Vargas leads apprentice Weston Hamilton atop the jockey standings, 32-19, and is also the leading rider in purses earned with more than $1 million. The winter-spring meet runs through March 31. ... The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved, growing the jackpot carryover to $42,563.90 for the return of live racing Friday. ... Jockey Ricardo Chiappe had two winners, aboard Dutch Blitz ($4.20) in the first race and Stay West ($6) in the fifth. Trainer Mike Trombetta saddled back-to-back winners with Truly Hot ($11.20) in the third and Springtime Wind ($3.40) in the fourth.

Poly's Lewis receives offer from Maryland

Maryland has offered Poly boys basketball sophomore Justin Lewis, he tweeted Monday, making the four-star forward the first Baltimore-area prospect in either the Class of 2019 or 2020 to receive a Terps scholarship offer. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound Lewis is rated the No. 63 overall prospect in the 247Sports.com Composite rankings for sophomore recruits. He also claims offers from Georgetown, Penn State , Boston College , Kansas State and Texas Christian, among others, and has participated in several U.S. men's junior national team minicamps. Lewis, a Calvert Hall transfer, has helped lead No. 4 Poly (21-4) to the Class 3A state semifinals. The Engineers will face Stephen Decatur of Worcester County on Thursday at the Xfinity Center in College Park.

IronBirds to honor military as Star-Spangled Banners

The Aberdeen IronBirds, the Orioles' Short-A affiliate, will change their name to the Aberdeen Star-Spangled Banners this season for Sunday home games and Military Appreciation Night on Aug. 9 to honor the military and Maryland as the birthplace of the national anthem. The IronBirds will wear uniforms that feature a patch for the branches of the military and the lyrics to the anthem on the jersey's tail. They will be auctioned later in the year to benefit the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a nonprofit that offers care to those who have lost a service member. The IronBirds will be again be called the Steam Crabs for one game, Aug. 24. The team will release a schedule of all-you-can-eat crab feasts Friday, which is National Crab Meat Day.

Baltimore boxer Chaney stays undefeated with KO

Baltimore-based heavyweight Cassius Chaney extended his record to 12-0 with a second-round knockout of Tim Washington on Saturday night in New York. The fight, on the undercard of the Sergey Kovalev-Igor Mikhalkin main event on HBO, was Chaney's second under the tutelage of Baltimore trainer Calvin Ford. Chaney grew up in Baltimore but moved away when he was 14 and only returned last year to work with Ford at the Upton Boxing Center. Chaney had been knocked down in his previous fight but quickly backed Washington (6-6, four knockouts) into a corner in the second round and pummeled him with head and body shots. He landed a clean right hand with 1 minute, 28 seconds left in the round, and the referee waved off the fight without a count.

Men's college lacrosse: Ethan Walker scored three goals and Trevor Baptiste went 12-for-20 on faceoffs to lift visiting No. 4 Denver (4-1) to a 10-6 win over No. 9 North Carolina (6-1).

Women's college lacrosse: Kylie Ohlmiller had four goals and two assists to lead No. 1 Stony Brook (5-0) to a 16-3 rout of host Michigan (2-5).

Women's college volleyball: Maryland hired AJ Bonetti as an assistant coach. Bonetti, a graduate of East Stroudsburg and George Washington, previously served as an assistant at Tennessee for two years. Before his stint at Tennessee, Bonetti spent seven years at UNC Wilmington .

Men's college track and field: Stevenson freshman Dimeon Wright (Winters Mill) qualified for the NCAA Division III indoor championships in the long jump, becoming the first male Mustang to qualify for nationals.

Digest (March 6): Baltimore City Community College winsregion championship, advances to district title game

Baltimore City Community College will compete this weekend for a district championship in men's basketball. The Panthers (20-1) won the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 20 Division I championship with an 84-68 semifinal victory over Harford CC on Saturday and an 80-78 championship-game win over Allegany College on Sunday. BCCC will travel to New York City this weekend to face ASA College for the district championship at a time and place to be determined. The winner advances to Hutchinson, Kan., to compete for the NJCAA Division I national title. Freshman Ed Oliver-Hampton led the way against Harford with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Kevin Holston added 14 points and Malik Marrow (12) and De'Ante Robinson (11) also scored in double figures. In the championship game, Marrow had 29 points and Robinson added 12. This is the third region championship in the past five seasons for coach Terry Maczko's team.

Blast open MASL playoffswith first game at Syracuse

The Blast open the Major Arena Soccer League playoffs on Thursday at Syracuse at 7:05 p.m. in the first game of the Eastern Divisional playoffs. The second game will be in Baltimore on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at SECU Arena. Game 3, which is a 15-minute mini game, would immediately follow Game 2 on Sunday evening, if necessary. Should the Blast defeat Syracuse and advance in the playoffs, the conference championship game would be in Baltimore on March 16 at 7:35 p.m. at SECU Arena against the winner of the series between the Milwaukee Wave and Cedar Rapids Rampage. Bears put transition tagon Mt. St. Joe grad Fuller

The Chicago Bears have placed the transition tag on veteran defensive back Kyle Fuller (Mount Saint Joseph), giving them a chance to match any offer he might receive in free agency. Fuller, 26, is considered a key player for Chicago's defense. The tag, announced Tuesday, guarantees Fuller $12.9 million next season. Fuller can sign an offer sheet with another team, but the Bears get a chance to match it and they are expected to seek a multiyear deal. The team gets no compensation if they choose not to match. Chicago hasn't used a transition tag since 2001, when it was applied to defensive lineman Bryan Robinson.

J. Hopkins sending recordnumber to swimming finals

Johns Hopkins will send a program-record 14 women's swimmers to the NCAA championships in two weeks. The championships will be held March 21-24 at the Indiana University Natatorium. Leading the way for the Blue Jays are five seniors who are making their fourth appearance at the NCAA championships: Lena Bless, Courtney Cowan, Kaitlin Jones, Gwynnie LaMastra and Anna Wisniewski. Junior Natalia Rincon is making her third trip to NCAAs while sophomores Sonia Lin, Kristen Petersen and Alison Shapiro are making their second trip. Making their first appearance at the championships are senior Sara Wujciak, sophomore Michelle Wang and freshmen Mikayla Bisignani, Emma McElrath and Amy Pearson. ... The Johns Hopkins men's swim team will send 13 to the finals. Leading the way for the Blue Jays men are seniors Davis Knox, Emile Kuyl, Kyle Otazu and Mark Wilson, who are making their fourth appearance at the NCAA championships. Seniors Michael Ashmead and Jan Hagemeister and juniors Emile Kuyl, Peter Lazorchak and Michael Wohl are making their third trip to NCAAs. Senior Peter Conzola is making his second appearance, while junior Alex Carson, sophomore Brandon Fabian and freshmen Nat Davenport and Marcelo Lauzurique are all making their first trip.

Men's college lacrosse: Loyola Maryland freshman Kevin Lindley was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Team of the Week after scoring 11 goals in two Greyhounds victories last week. Lindley's week was capped by a record-setting eight goals and an assist against Holy Cross on Sunday. ... Maryland senior midfielder Connor Kelly is the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, and Terps faceoff specialist Justin Shockey is the Freshman of the Week.

Women's college lacrosse: Maryland senior attacker Megan Whittle was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Terps sophomore defender Lizzie Colson was named Defensive Player of the Week. Johns Hopkins freshman midfielder Shelby Harrison was the Freshman of the Week. ... College football: Bowie State will open its 2018 season on the road at Football Championship Subdivision opponent Wagner on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Sept. 22, making a trip to Raleigh, N.C., to face Saint Augustine's at 1 p.m. and will make their home debut Sept. 29 against Winston-Salem State at 4 p.m.

Tiwian Kendley made two free throws with seven second left as seventh-seeded Morgan State (13-18) won a 78-77 upset victory over second-seeded Bethune-Cookman (18-14) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinal in Norfolk, Va. Kendley finished with a game-high 31 points. ... Men's college basketball: Phillip Carr scored 21 points, Tyler Streeter added 14, including a go-ahead 3-pointer late, and Morgan State (12-18) nearly blew a 17-point lead but won, 83-80, against South Carolina State (10-22) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament opener Tuesday night in Norfolk, Va. Men's college lacrossse: Cornell goalie Christian Knight (Boys' Latin) was named Ivy League Player of the Week after making a career-high 19 saves in a near upset of top-ranked Albany.

Women's college lacrosse: Georgetown 's Francesca Whitehurst (Roland Park) was named Big East Midfielder of the Week.

Major League Soccer: D.C. United acquired Deportivo Saprissa's Costa Rican defender Joseph Mora, 25, on a permanent transfer pending receipt of his P1 visa and international transfer certificate.

Columbia 's Conley winshandicapping contest

Brian Conley of Columbia won the Maryland Jockey Club's Champions Handicapping Tournament on Saturday at Laurel Park . He finished with a balance of $2,192 to edge Coleen Curley and capture the spring session of the tournament. In addition to prize money, the top four finishers qualified for automatic berths to the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championship, Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge or The Big One. A total of 226 entries were accepted for the tournament. After wagering on races from Laurel, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, Aqueduct and Tampa Bay Downs, with no mandatory races and a minimum $20 wager, Conley finished $3.20 ahead of Curley's $2,188.80 and earned $3,780 in prize money. Given his choice of four tournament berths, Conley selected the BCBC to be held Nov. 2 and 3 at Churchill Downs. Curley, of Raleigh, N.C., took home $2,520 in prize money and chose a berth in the NHC set for February in Las Vegas. Third place went to Carol Johnson of Oakton, Va., who finished with a balance of $2,184 and earned $1,260, and will compete in The Big One on Sept. 22 and 23 at Laurel. Shawn Turner of Falling Waters, W.Va., was fourth with a balance of $1,442 and earned $756, and is also headed to the NHC. Rounding out the top 10 finishers were Brian Costello with a tournament balance of $1,295, Robin D. Buser ($1,075.20), John Zielinski ($1,006), Jake Jacobs ($870), Irvin Davis ($861) and Ian Whipkey ($812). Each player earned $756 in prize money. The fall session of the MJC Champions Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 18 at Laurel.

Digest (March 8): Blast stop Syracuse surge to win MASL playoff opener, 7-6

The Blast held off a late Syracuse rally to defeat the Silver Knights , 7-6, in Game 1 of the Major Arena Soccer League Eastern Division final. Daniel Peruzzi and Vini Dantas each had two goals for the Blast. Bo Jelovac recorded two goals and one assist for Syracuse. The Blast built a 5-0 lead early in the second half and then had to hold on. Tony Donatelli, Jamie Thomas and Jonathan Greenfield each recorded an assist for Baltimore. Pat Healey had six blocks and goalkeeper Joey Kapinos made 14 saves for the Blast. The Blast host Game 2 of the best-of-five series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Towson's SECU Arena. If Syracuse wins Game 2, a mini-game will be played Sunday to decide the division title.

Fishing: Bryan Schmitt of Deale is in fifth place at the after the first day at the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga. He caught a five-bass limit of 18 pounds, 13 ounces and trails leader Bradley Hallman of Norman Oklahoma by 4 pounds, 14 ounces in a field of 184 of the world's best bass-fishing professionals competing for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division.

Men's college lacrosse: Liam Limoges scored four goals to lead No. 15 Vermont (7-0) to a 17-14 victory over visiting Sacred Heart (3-4). The Pioneers put together a 5-0 rally late in the game that fell short.

Women's college lacrosse: Albright scored the final 10 goals of the first half and rolled to a 17-9 victory over McDaniel. Olivia Geiger (Marriotts Ridge) led the Green Terror (3-2) with three goals.

College baseball: Freshman Randy Bednar had three hits, including a solo home run, but Maryland fell, 7-1, to visiting Delaware.

Navy women advanceto Patriot League final

Taylor Dunham scored 18 point to lead five Mids in double-digit scoring as visting Navy (25-6) won, 68-62, over Bucknell (22-9) in a Patriot League semifinal Thursday night. Navy has won nine of its past 11 games and will face American in Sunday's championship. Other double-figure scorers for the Mids were Hannah Fenske (13), Bianca Roach (10), Kaila Clark (10, Archbishop Spalding) and Laurel Jaunich (10). Navy will be making its seventh Patriot League championship appearance. ... Braennan Farrar scored 14 points, but sixth-seeded Morgan State (16-15) lost, 66-57, to third-seeded Hampton (17-13) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinal in Norfolk, Va. The defending champion Pirates opened with a 24-11 run in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 points.

Men's awards: Johns Hopkins' Josh Loeffler ECAC Division III Coach of the Year and junior Michael Gardner was named honorable mention All-ECAC. ... Former Johns Hopkins coach Bill Nelson is one of three recipients of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III Outstanding Service Award.

Sophomore Mia DeRuggiero (Sparrows Point) set a school record with nine assists Friday afternoon as the Blue Hens defeated Canisius, 16-9. DeRuggiero broke the 34-year-old mark previously set by Karen Emas in April 1984. ... Kierstyn Voiro scored the game-winner in triple overtime to lift visiting Lehigh (4-3) to a 9-8 victory over Mount St. Mary's (3-3). Mountain Hawks' Sondra Dickey scored the tying goal with 3:26 left in regulation. Carly Miller (Marriotts Ridge) had a hat trick for the Mount. ... Darby Kiernan scored five goals to help No. 15 Colorado (4-2, 1-0 Pac 12) win a come-from-behind 18-16 victory over No. 19 Stanford (4-3, 0-1). The Buffaloes went on a 6-0 run over the final 13 minutes, including a natural hat trick by Kiernan, to win. Maggie Nick had a game-high six goals for the Cardinal.

College baseball: Towson second baseman Dirk Masters drove in two runs in the Tigers' 5-2 loss to visiting Ohio. ... Maryland lost 7-3 to visiting Bryant.

Women's pro soccer: The Washington Spirit will host North Carolina at Evergreen SportsPlex in Leesburg, Va., tonight at 7:15 in the club's National Women's Soccer League preseason opener. It is the second year in a row that the Spirit have hosted the 22-time women's college soccer national champion Tar Heels for a preseason friendly at Evergreen Sportsplex. Washington defeated North Carolina, 5-0, in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,000 fans in 2017.

Men's pro soccer: D.C. United signed the United Soccer League's all-time goalscoring leader Dane Kelly via Major League Soccer's discovery process. The forward spent the 2017 USL season with Reno 1868 FC, scoring 18 goals on the way to becoming the league's Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner.

Baltimore City Community College defeated ASA College, 76-68, at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Friday night to capture the National Junior College Athletic Association District III men's basketball championship. The Panthers, who won the Region 20 title the previous weekend, advance to Hutchinson, Kan., to compete for the NJCAA Division I national championship.

Men's award: Stevenson senior Danzel Wright was named a second-team ECAC All-Star. Wright, a MAC Commonwealth second-team selection, averaged 20.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

Vargas adds to his leading jockey totals at Laurel Park

Meet-leading jockey Jorge Vargas Jr. added two winners with Phil's Cocktail ($12.20) in the second race and Oldfashioned Club ($4) in the fifth at Laurel Park on Saturday. J.D. Acosta also won twice aboard Brighton Lane ($7.20) in the sixth and Royal Crusader ($8.80) in the eighth, and Sheldon Russell doubled on Delta Outlaw ($4.40) in the seventh and Presenter ($7.20) in the ninth. Jockeys Elvis Trujillo and Steve Hamilton were taken to Howard County Hospital for observation following a three-horse spill near the eighth pole in Race 8. Jockey Edwin Gonzalez, whose mount, Gato Dolce, broke down and caused the chain reaction spill, escaped serious injury. ... The 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot swelled to $62,695.08 for today after going unsolved on Saturday's nine-race program. A total of $31,612 was wagered into the popular multi-race wager, adding to a carryover of $52,584 from Friday's program. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $583.76. Today's Rainbow 6 covers Races 4-9 highlighted by a $42,000 entry-level allowance for fillies and mares 4 and up on the main track. There will also be a carryover of $4,016.58 in the $1 Super Hi-5 for today's opener. First race post time is 12:30 p.m.

Towson cruises to twovictories in softball tourney

The Towson University softball team used a nine-run fourth inning that was highlighted by three home runs, including a Nicole Stockinger grand slam, to beat Fairfield, 14-1, in the Tiger Clash on Saturday. The Tigers returned a short time later and rode the dominant pitching of Julia Smith-Harrington, who opened the game with 61/3 hitless innings, to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 4-0. The two victories extended Towson's winning streak to eight and raised its record to 14-3, its best mark after 17 games since 1987.

College baseball: Richard Miller hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Towson fell short against Ohio University , 10-9, on Saturdeay.

Women's lacrosse: US Lacrosse announced the appointment of four new members to the 2019 U.S. women's U19 national team staff. Kelly Amonte Hiller was named as head coach of the team in February. Named as assistant coaches are Ann Elliott, Brooke Matthews (Bryn Mawr coach) and Angela McMahon. Meredith Frank McGinnis will serve as the team's assistant manager, working with Lance Basler, the general manager for the U.S. national teams.

College track and field: Johns Hopkins' Alex Jebb has been named the Mideast Region men's and women's assistant coach of the year while Bobby Van Allen has been named the Mideast Region women's coach of the year. Stevenson's Erick Camodeca was named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.

Men's hockey: Stevenson senior Mike Davis became the second Mustang to sign a professional hockey contract, signing with the Birmingham Bulls of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Men's college swimming: Loyola Maryland senior Ben Cono qualified for the NCAA championships for the third straight season and will compete at the national meet March 21-24 in Minneapolis.

Digest (March 14): Mount St. Mary's names Tori Krause women's soccer coach

Mount St. Mary's promoted former assistant Tori Krause to head coach of its women's soccer program. Krause assisted Joe Nemzer last season after working as the director of performance analysis with the women's soccer program at North Carolina. The Cary, N.C., native played center midfield at Davidson.

Women's college lacrosse: Johns Hopkins sophomore Maggie Schneidereith is Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, Hopkins junior Haley Crosson is Defensive Player of the Week and Hopkins' Aurora Cordingley is Freshman of the Week.

Men's college lacrosse: Hopkins' Cole Williams and Jack Rapine were named the Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Women's college volleyball: Setter Nicole Alford (South River) plans to transfer from Georgia Tech to Maryland. Alford, who had 270 assists in 21 matches for the Yellow Jackets, has three years of eligibility remaining beginning next season.

Men's college basketball: D3hoops.com named Hopkins coach Josh Loeffler as the Middle Atlantic Co-Coach of the Year and junior Michael Gardner to the All-Middle Atlantic second team.

College baseball: Towson third baseman Richard Miller went 4-for-5 with a triple and a grand slamto lead the Tigers (3-11) to a 12-2 victory over Delaware State Tuesday afternoon. Reliever Mason Anderson allowed just two hits over three shutout innings for the victory. ... Maryland (9-7) took a 6-0 lead, but lost to visiting Delaware, 7-6. The Blue Hens tied the ballgame in the eighth before Calvin Scott hit a walk-off home run in the ninth.

Glenelg Country pulls offseason-opening lax upset

Glenelg Country secured a 10-9 girls lacrosse victory over Notre Dame Prep, who entered the season as the No. 5 team in the country by US Lacrosse Magazine. "They have a great team over there," Notre Dame Prep coach Mac Ford said. "The goalie got really hot — that was the difference — and they even played man down for part of the game and they gutted it out. They were just a little bit better on ground balls and and in the draw circle they were a little bit better than we were today." Avery Dyer made 13 saves for Glenelg Country in their season-opening home win, while junior Alli Bateman recorded a hat trick and Hannah Glaros, Shay Ahearn and Kate Sites added two goals apiece.

Boys lacrosse: Ohio State -bound Brendan Grimes scored a game-high five goals to lead visiting Boys' Latin (3-0) to a 12-7 boys lacrosse victory over St. Andrew's (Fla.) in Boca Raton. The Scots (5-2) led 2-1 in the first quarter before the Lakers took an 8-2 advantage at the half.

BMGC to host final winter scramble at Forest Park

Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation, also known as Baltimore's Classic Five, will host the final in its series of scramble outings this winter, the Superintendent's Revenge Scramble on March 24 at Forest Park Golf Course. Penn State 's Sandy Barbour, a Severn graduate and former Annapolis resident, has been selected as a finalist for the SportsBusiness Journal's Athletic Director of the Year for 2017-18. The leader of Penn State's 31-sport athletic program is among five finalists for the honor. The recipient will be announced May 23 at the 11th Annual SBJ Sports Business Awards Gala in New York. Barbour is joined by Jeff Bourne (James Madison), Boo Corrigan (Army West Point), Jim Phillips (Northwestern) and Danny White (UCF). Corrigan is a former sports marketer in Baltimore and a former associate athletic director for marketing at Navy. Last year, Barbour was selected by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics as one of four FBS recipients of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award.

The Baltimore Brigade signed quarterback Randy Hippeard, the Arena Football League 's 2017 Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year. "This is a landmark day for the Baltimore Brigade," Brigade coach Omarr Smith said. "Adding the reigning MVP to our team is an instant upgrade. Randy exhibits great leadership on and off the field, and his competitive spirit will be infectious to all of his teammates. We are thrilled to have Randy as the face of the Baltimore Brigade." In 2017 with the Tampa Bay Storm , Hippeard led the AFL in passing yards (3,506), completions (328), attempts (494) and fewest interceptions thrown (eight). He ranked second in passing touchdowns (80). A five-year AFL veteran, Hippeard played three seasons with the Storm (2013, 2014, 2017) and two with the Orlando Predators (2015, 2016), accumulating 15,185 passing yards and 323 passing touchdowns. The Brigade starts the season April 13 at 7 p.m. when they host the Washington Valor at Royal Farms Arena.

Blast coach Danny Kelly was nominated for Major Arena Soccer League Coach of the Year and Blast defender Pat Healey was nominated for Defender of the Year. MASL nominees were selected from league-wide voting by team personnel. The final awards will be announced by commissioner Joshua Schaub at the Ron Newman Cup Championship news conference Saturday at 3 p.m. The Blast play the Monterrey Flash on Sunday for the MASL title.

Women's soccer: Washington Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan and forwards Ashley Hatch and Mallory Pugh were named to the U.S. women's national team's 22-player roster for two friendly matches in April against Mexico. ... The Spirit claimed forward Tiffany Weimer off waivers. Weimer played for the Spirit in 2014 and 2015. She made 17 National Women's Soccer League appearances in 2017 with the Boston Breakers, recording one assist.

USBO light heavyweight champion Travis "Seveer" Reeves of Baltimore will challenge Karo Murat of Bayern, Germany, for the vacant IBO world light heavyweight championship on Saturday in Hamburg, Germany. The 37-year-old Reeves (15-2-2, 7 knockouts) has won 12 straight bouts, including taking the USBO championship in a second-round TKO over Aaron Quattrocchi in December 2016 in Baltimore. Reeves, a Morgan State graduate, won his most recent bout by four-round disqualification over Josue Obando on June 17 in Baltimore. Murat (31-3-1, 20 KOs) is the current IBF international light heavyweight and European Boxing Union light heavyweight champion. Murat won the EBU title in his most recent bout with an 11th-round TKO over formerly undefeated Dominic Boesel on July 1 in Dresden, Germany. Women's college lacrosse: Kiley Keating had a career-high 11 saves and Kaitlin Thornton scored four goals as No. 14 Towson (6-2) earned a 14-11 victory over No. 6 Florida (6-3). The visiting Tigers built an 8-4 lead in the first half and held off a second-half rally. Florida outscored Towson 6-1 over the final 11:29. Varsity: The second day of spring brought more winter weather, resulting in the closing of schools and postponing of athletic events throughout the area. Digest (March 22): Baltimore Brigade add four more to roster before camp

The Brigade announced a flurry of signings as they prepare to open training camp this weekend. Baltimore signed former Terps Andre Monroe (defensive lineman) and Daniel Adams (wide receiver) as well as defensive back Virgil Gray and wide receiver Kendrick Ings. Monroe, who last played for the Terps in 2014, holds the school record for career sacks (25) and led the team in the category all three seasons he played. The Upper Marlboro resident ranks third in school history with 38.5 career tackles for loss. Adams appeared in two games for the Terps in 2014, catching two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. Gray's six-year AFL playing career includes more than 300 solo tackles, 47 interceptions and seven defensive touchdowns. Gray spent last season on the Brigade coaching staff, coordinating defensive backs and special teams. In 2017, Ings ranked second in the AFL in receptions (98), third in receiving yards (1,141) and fourth in receiving touchdowns per game (4.6) with the Tampa Bay Storm . Ings reunites with quarterback Randy Hippeard, who signed with the Brigade earlier this week. The Brigade will open training camp Sunday at Coppermine Fieldhouse. Aldrich leaves UMBC for Longwood basketball post

UMBC director of recruiting and program development Griff Aldrich was named the head coach at Longwood on Thursday, the first member of the Retrievers' coaching staff to leave Catonsville after the team's NCAA tournament surprise. Aldrich, who played with UMBC head coach Ryan Odom at Division III Hampden-Sydney, joined the Retrievers as director of basketball operations last season. In his two years at the school, UMBC won 46 games, including a program-record 25 this season.

Maryland women's basketball: Maryland sophomore Kaila Charles and coach Brenda Frese earned All-Region honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Charles is one of 52 All-Region nominees for the 2018 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Team. Frese was named United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career and fourth year straight.

Women's college volleyball: Larry Bock, who won more matches than any other coach in NCAA volleyball history, has retired after seven seasons as coach at Navy and 41 years as a college coach. He holds NCAA records for the most career wins as a women's coach (1,348) and as a college volleyball coach (1,448). He finished with a 96-103 record in seven seasons at Navy. Before joining the Mids, he spent 34 years at Juniata, going 1,252-192.

Women's college lacrosse: Megan Whittle (McDonogh) had four goals and an assist to lead No. 4 Maryland (7-1) to a 13-7 victory over No. 7 Penn (7-1). The visiting Terps led 8-4 at halftime. ... Katie O'Donnell scored the game-winner 27 seconds into overtime as No. 20 Penn State (7-4, 2-0 Big Ten) won 13-12 over visiting Johns Hopkins (7-4, 0-2). Maggie Schneidereith (Towson) tied the game (12-12) for Hopkins with 4:56 left in regulation and forced overtime. Schneidereith finished with four goals and had a natural hat trick during the second half. Coach Missy Doherty got her 100th win at Penn State.

Blohm, an Orioles draft pick two years ago, notched his third win, only allowing four hits and one walk while striking out 12 of 28 batters. The one run Stetson scored was unearned. Former City forward Fair signs with Bulls

The Chicago Bulls signed forward CJ Fair (City). Fair, a 2014 All-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team pick at Syracuse, has appeared in 47 G-League games (25 starts) this season, splitting time between the Windy City Bulls and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants . He has averaged 10.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 25.4 minutes per game. Fair, 26, spent 2016 in France, playing for Limoges Cercle Saint-Pierre in Eurocup. He returned to the United States in 2017 and played with the Mad Ants until he was traded to Windy City earlier this season. In a related move, Chicago waived forward Jaylen Johnson.

Horse racing: The seventh annual Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show will take place July 7 beginning at 8 a.m. in the infield at Pimlico Race Course. All proceeds from ticket sales and entry fees will benefit Beyond the Wire, a Thoroughbred aftercare program launched in 2016 by the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. Since 2012, the Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show has offered more than $95,000 in prize money and raised more than $67,000 to benefit Thoroughbred aftercare charities. This year, more than $18,000 in prize money is available in 20 classes highlighted by the $10,000 Hillwood Stable Jumper Speed Stake and the $1,000 Dark Hollow Farm Open Hunter Classic. National Women's Soccer League: The Washington Spirit fell, 2-1, to the host Seattle Reign on Saturday night in the regular-season opener for both teams. Midfielder Joanna Lohman scored in the 68th minute for Washington off an assist from Argentine international Estefania Banini. U.S. international forward Megan Rapinoe was involved in both goals for Seattle, starting with her own goal off a free kick in the seventh minute. Rapinoe assisted Jodie Taylor's goal in the 35th minute.

Katie Ledecky's short but spectacular college swimming career is finished. The five-time Olympic champion will forgo her final two seasons of eligibility at Stanford to embark on a professional swimming career, immediately setting her sights on the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. "I've had two really great years of college swimming, have been on an incredible team that's won back-to-back national championships," the Bethesda native said in an interview with The Washington Post. "I feel like now is the right time for me to be making this transition and starting this next chapter." Ledecky, who turned 21 this month, had settled on her decision early in the school year but didn't make it public until a speaking appearance Monday at the National Press Club in Washington. The move means Ledecky can take on lucrative endorsement deals and can start competing for money. It also means she can no longer swim for Stanford, bringing to a close a brilliant but brief college career. In addition to helping the Cardinal win two national championships, Ledecky won eight NCAA titles, including three this month.

Perry Hall star Higgs decommits from Ole Miss; Harried U.S. aide

Perry Hall basketball standout Anthony Higgs has decommitted from Mississippi, according to Gators coach George Panageotou. The 6-foot-9 Higgs, who helped lead Perry Hall to a second straight Class 4A state crown this month, received his release from his letter of intent over the weekend. Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy, whom he signed to play for, stepped down in February and was replaced this month by former Middle Tennessee coach Kermit Davis. Higgs, who earned All-Metro first-team honors as a junior, averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists as the Gators finished with a 21-6 mark. Panageotou mentioned Illinois , Wake Forest, Towson , Louisiana Tech, Coastal Carolina and Mount St. Mary's as schools that have shown interest in Higgs since he was released from his commitment to Ole Miss.

More: Lake Clifton coach Herman "Tree" Harried has been named an assistant for the USA Junior National Select Team. The U.S. team will take on the World Select Team in the 21st annual Nike Hoop Summit in Portland, Ore., on April 13. Harried, who just completed his 21st season at Lake Clifton with the program's fourth state title, has worked with USA youth basketball in the past. He was part of gold medal-winning teams in the first FIBA Americas U-16 Championship (2009) in Mendoza, Argentina, and first FIBA U-17 World Championship (2010) in Hamburg, Germany. Harried also coached teams to wins in the 2005 and 2006 Nike Hoop Summits. Additionally, he served on the USA Basketball Men's Developmental National Team Committee from 2013 to 2016.

Woods to play in National at TPC Potomac this summer

Tiger Woods will return to the Maryland area this summer to play in the National at TPC Potomac. "I am really looking forward to being back in the D.C. area this summer playing in The National," Woods said Monday. The tournament will be held June 25-July 1. Woods, who last competed in the tournament in 2015, won in 2009 and 2012. After recovering from back surgery, Woods returned to competitive golf in November and has competed in six events with the PGA Tour. His best finish has been at the Valspar Championship in Florida, where he tied for second. Tickets are available at NationalGolfTournament.com.

Terps, Towson gymnasts qualify for regionals

The Maryland women's gymnastics team qualified for the postseason and will compete in the NCAA regionals in Raleigh, N.C., on April 7. Towson's Mary Elle Arduino, Tyra McKellar and Gabriella Yarussi also will be competing at the Raleigh regional. They qualified as individuals after the Tigers failed to qualify as a team. Arduino will compete in the all-around, while McKellar will compete on uneven bars and Yarussi on the balance beam. Towson's Cortni Baker is an alternate for vault, and Tess Zientek is an alternate for uneven bars. The Terps are coming off of an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten championships, where coach Brett Nelligan was named the conference's Coach of the Year. The Tigers finished fourth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League championships at SECU Arena, where Arduino won the balance beam title with 9.95 points. The top 36-ranked teams qualify for regionals, and the regional assignments were announced by the NCAA on Monday.

NFL: The Washington Redskins signed former Chicago Bears and Ravens linebacker Pernell McPhee. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. McPhee spent the past three seasons in Chicago, recording 14 sacks (six in 2015 and four the past two years), and had his highest single-season sack total (71/2) while with the Ravens in 2014. ... The Detroit Lions signed former Raven Jonathan Freeny , a free-agent linebacker who played with three teams last season. Freeny, 28, spent time with the New England Patriots , Ravens and New Orleans Saints , playing in a total of six games. He made 11 starts for the Patriots over two seasons from 2015 to 2016.

MMG Stables' multiple Grade 3 winner El Areeb, one of the leading Triple Crown contenders last winter before being sidelined with a knee injury, seeks his first win in more than a year in the featured ninth race today at Laurel Park. El Areeb is entered in the 7-furlong $50,000 third-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up. The race attracted a stakes-quality field of eight that also includes El Areeb's stablemate Irish Colonel, stakes winners Sonny Inspired and Noteworthy Peach and multiple stakes-placed Grasshoppin, Final Prospect and Rockinn On Bye. El Areeb has been unable to recapture the form he showed last winter, extending his winning streak to four races with victories in the Withers (G3) and Gotham (G3) at Aqueduct after closing his juvenile campaign with a decisive triumph in the James F. Lewis III at Laurel. The 4-year-old son of Exchange Rate had surgery to repair his knee, injured while training for the 2017 Wood Memorial (G2), and he didn't return to the races until Nov. 11, finishing last of six in the 7-furlong City of Laurel Stakes. El Areeb made his seasonal debut Jan. 8 in the 6-furlong Dave's Friend at Laurel, but had been bothered by a foot problem both before and after the race. Navy men's basketball senior guard Shawn Anderson has been named to the 2017-18 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Senior CLASS Award All-America first team. West Virginia's Jevon Carter was named the Senior Class Award winner and Carter was joined on the Senior CLASS Award All-America first team by Anderson, A.J. Jacobson (North Dakota State), Justin Johnson (Western Kentucky ) and Yante Maten ( Georgia ). The Senior CLASS Award All-America second team features Vladimir Brodziansky (TCU), Angel Delgado (Seton Hall), Rob Gray (Houston), Luke Morrison (Army West Point) and Johnathan Williams ( Gonzaga ). An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition. Anderson was named to the All- Patriot League first team in 2017-18, after making the all-league second team last season. Anderson is involved in community service and he co-founded the non-profit Forever Red Hurricanes with a high school classmate. as one of the 10 finalists in February.

Navy football: Coach Ken Niumatalolo announced that Joe DuPaix will return to the Naval Academy as an assistant coach. DuPaix will coach slotbacks, the position he oversaw while in Annapolis from 2008 through 2010.

Old Dominion transferplans to visit Maryland

Old Dominion redshirt junior forward Trey Porter said Wednesday that he plans on taking an unofficial visit Friday to Maryland, where he could be eligible to play basketball next season as a graduate transfer. Porter averaged career highs of 13.2 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Monarchs in 2017-18, and finished the season strong, averaging 18 points and 7.5 rebounds over the team's last four games. Playing a career-high 23.6 minutes a game, Porter also received attention during his breakout college season because he plays with an insulin patch. Porter was diagnosed with diabetes as an infant. A late-bloomer who played mostly soccer growing up in Fredericksburg, Va., and didn't start playing Amateur Athletic Union basketball until high school, Porter played two years at ODU after transferring from George Mason. The Terps were among the first teams to contact the 6-11, 225-pound Porter after he asked for his release. Porter graduated from ODU in December with a degree in communications. Porter said his decision won't be affected by whether 6-10 center Bruno Fernando opts to forgo his remaining college eligibility after his freshman year.

Siena's Patsos defends selfagainst abuse allegations

Embattled Siena men's basketball coach Jimmy Patsos defended himself Friday against recent allegations that he verbally abused a team manager and denied any knowledge of withholding per diem payments to his players. "I never taunted, harassed or abuse this young man, nor did my coaches or players create a hostile environment for him," Patsos said. "We did know he had OCD [obsessive compulsive disorder] … He was adamant that he wanted to be treated the same as everyone else." At a news conference called by Patsos and his attorney, Dick Walsh, near the upstate New York campus, the former Loyola Maryland coach and longtime Maryland assistant said that had a good relationship with the manager and his family and was "greatly surprised" by the complaint filed with the university.

According to Maryland Jockey Club officials, the record for the state's largest carryover is $275,322, reached heading into closing day of Pimlico Race Course's spring meet on June 6, 2015. A mandatory payout that day produced multiple returns of $12,518.28. The Rainbow 6 was introduced in Maryland on April 2, 2015, initially as a 10-cent wager, on opening day of Pimlico's spring meet. A total of $65,011 was wagered into the Rainbow 6 Saturday, adding to a carryover of $233,622.91 from April 6. Multiple tickets were sold with all six winners, each worth $635.28.

Men's college golf: Loyola Maryland senior Brendan Peel was named the Patriot League Golfer of the Month. Peel earned three top-20 finishes to start spring competition, including a personal-best second-place finish at the Kingsmill Invitational on March 25-27. The senior shot a 1-over 211 (71-70-70), finishing as the runner-up in the 127-person tournament field to help the Greyhounds to a third-place finish of 24 teams.

Women's college golf: Navy sophomore Morgan Frazier was named the Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Month. Frazier tied for 32nd place in a 218-player field with a 54-hole score of 223 (78-69-76; +7) at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic. Frazier's second-round score of 2-under par 69 was the second-best individual round in program history and her career-low. Her 223 was the lowest three-round total of her career and the third-lowest in school history.

Men's college lacrosse: Maryland senior goalkeeper Dan Morris is one of 10 finalists for the college lacrosse Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
