No suspension for Capitals ' Wilson for Game 2 hit

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson will not have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety and will not face a suspension for a hit that knocked Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin out of Sunday's Game 2 during the teams' second-round playoff series. "The league is a neutral party," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said Monday. "They look at it. I know each organization, each fan base, will have their own opinions. That's why there's a neutral party in it. Whatever they decided, we were fine with." Wilson's shoulder appeared to strike Dumoulin in the head as the defenseman turned away from an oncoming hit from Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin . Dumoulin did not return to the game, and he practiced in Pittsburgh on Monday in a noncontact jersey. He has averaged more than 22 minutes for the Penguins in the playoffs as a top-pairing defenseman. According to a person familiar with the league's supplemental discipline process, in the NHL's view, Dumoulin materially changed the position of his head and body immediately before contact. Wilson was chasing him and not able to initiate any sort of hit, but Dumoulin stopped suddenly. Per the wording of Rule 48.1.iii, such hits are considered unavoidable and not suspension-worthy. A penalty wasn't called on the ice.

Old Mill grad Hader sets MLB record with 8 Ks in 22/3 innings

Old Mill graduate Josh Hader set a modern-day major league baseball record with a spectacular performance Monday night. Hader, in his second season as a relief pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers , had eight strikeouts in just 22/3 innings against the Cincinnati Reds . The hard-throwing left-hander, a 19th-round draft pick by the Orioles in 2012, needed only 37 pitches to retire eight of the nine hitters he faced to earn the save as the Brewers beat the Reds, 6-5, at Great American Ball Park. "I don't know what to say about Josh," Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell told reporters during the postgame news conference. "Literally, your mouth is kind of wide-open while watching it. It was absolutely incredible." Hader relieved Brandon Woodruff with one out in the seventh inning and the Brewers clinging to the one-run lead. The Millersville native struck out perennial All-Star slugger Joey Votto on three pitches and needed four pitches to fan Scott Schebler to close out the inning. Hader began the eighth by striking out Eugenio Suarez on just four offerings. Tucker Barnhart drew a five-pitch walk, but Hader, 24, recovered nicely, blowing away Alex Blandino on four pitches and pinch-hitter Adam Duvall on three. "I don't think anybody could have hit [Hader] tonight," Cincinnati interim manager Jim Riggleman said. Hader had not pitched since Wednesday. "I definitely felt good. Body was feeling good on that rest," Hader told reporters. "It was nice to be able to stretch it out, get a couple innings in and let the fastball eat a little bit."

Digest: Capitals' Tom Wilson suspended three games for hit to head

The NHL suspended Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson three games on Wednesday for an illegal hit on Pittsburgh's Zach Aston-Reese.

The league announced the suspension less than 24 hours after Wilson broke Aston-Reese's jaw with a violent collision near the Washington bench in the second period of Washington's 4-3 Game 3 victory over the Penguins .

Aston-Reese was stickhandling near the Capitals bench when Wilson drilled the rookie with his left shoulder. The force propelled Wilson up into the Washington bench while Aston-Reese lay on the ice for several moments before skating off. He was later diagnosed with a concussion and a broken jaw.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety ruled Wilson made Aston-Reese's head the initial point of contact during the collision, pointing out that Wilson did not have to pivot to his left side to hit Aston-Reese.

The league said Aston-Reese made no sudden movement at the last second that made contact unavoidable. The league pointed out several ways Wilson could have finished the play legally only to instead launch himself at Aston-Reese.

"He extends up and into the hit unnecessarily," the league said in a video.

While Wilson was not penalized during the game, the league's Department of Player Safety called for a hearing on Wednesday.

This isn't the first time this season Wilson has been disciplined by the league. He was forced to sit out two preseason games following a late hit on St. Louis Blues rookie Robert Thomas and was suspended for the first four games of the regular season for boarding Blues forward Sammy Blais shortly after his return.

The league pointed out Wilson's status as a repeat offender as a factor in the length of the suspension it handed out.

Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday night in Pittsburgh.
